I came to Jim at a time when most of my days were spent in a negative headspace, since a single negative event or thought could derail my mind for an entire day. Plus, most of my energy was occupied by things I felt I was supposed to do rather than things that made me happy, so I experienced very little joy in my life . . . [ + more ]
. . . (and when I did find time for my hobbies, I found that they no longer gave me happiness).I was also dealing with a host of physical symptoms, like having a migraine seemingly 80% of the time.
Basically, I felt horrible, and like my life wasn’t moving forward.
The experience of working on these things with Jim was, in a word, incredible. To be perfectly honest, during the first few sessions I wasn’t entirely sure what to think but it soon became clear that Jim was methodically and comprehensively building a profile of me. His work is not a “one-size-fits-all” approach to self-improvement. Our work was intensive. He helped me discover or rediscover my core motivators, and then we built a plan to restructure my life around them.
All throughout our work together, I felt incredibly cared for. I know Jim was every bit as invested in my success as I was. In fact, sometimes he seemed more invested than I was :). During our 10th session, he would reference stuff I brought up two months earlier during our 2nd session, which I had long forgotten.
While my progress wasn’t a perfectly linear path, each time I compared my current state of mind to my state of mind from a month or even a week earlier, my conclusion was almost always, “I’m doing better NOW than I was THEN.” The cumulative effect of this incremental improvement over ten weeks is truly remarkable. Even now that I’ve concluded my work with Jim, I’m still using the skills he taught me, and things are still getting better.
Since working with him, I’ve had three of the most productive months I’ve had in the past three years. Most interestingly, this productivity hasn’t come from some kind of temporary “energy stimulus” that you might get from a motivational speaker, but from the deeper sense of calm I have, and my deeper understanding of what motivates me, of WHY I’m doing each item on my list.
Now, my tasks don’t require the nearly the emotional exertion they used to. In fact, tasks that once felt like homework once again bring me joy. I now finish my work days ready for some relaxation, but NOT burned out.
This new relationship to my work and other obligations produced perhaps the most important result of my work with Jim: I feel less wound up all the time, and there has been significant reduction in the physical symptoms I’d had, which I had always assumed were due to some undiagnosed physiological issue.
Rather than taking one big insight away from my work with Jim, I’ve taken dozens, hundreds, of smaller insights. From recognizing that the dread I feel on Sunday evening is largely self-induced, to being able to catch myself when I fixate on something negative, I’ve been able to dramatically improve my day-to-day levels of happiness.
In sum, I would recommend Jim to anybody who’s looking to roll up his or her sleeves and make lasting, foundational change. It’s not always easy or fun (though it is a lot of the time!) but true change rarely is. He’s one of the most caring and knowledgeable practitioners I’ve ever worked with—and I’ve worked with many!
